Houseplant Tips For Winter

Houseplant Tips For Winter

The winter months can be hard on your houseplants. These 5 tips will ensure your plants stay happy during their dormant season✨

1. WATER LESS OFTEN🌿

Since plants aren’t actively growing during the winter months, they don’t use as much energy and won’t go through their water supply as quickly. If you normally water once a week, you can likely cut back to once every 10-14 days. It’s always best to feel your plants’ soil to determine when it’s time to water (and when in doubt, let them dry out).

2. MOVE PLANTS TO BRIGHTER LIGHT🌿

Since the sun isn’t as bright or present as long during the winter months, your light-loving plants such as ficuses may need to be moved closer to windows or supplemented with grow lights. You can find our grow light recs here.

3. DON’T REPOT OR FERTILIZE ‘TIL SPRING🌿

While plants are dormant (not actively growing), it’s basically best to leave them alone and avoid anything that will put them into shock like repotting, disrupting root systems, fertilizing, or overwatering. Save all that goodness for spring and summer.

4. INCREASE HUMIDITY🌿

Dry air from running the heat inside your home is a sure fire way to slowly kill your tropical plants during the winter months. Increasing the humidity around your plants can be done by misting the foliage, placing pebble trays underneath plants, or simply placing a humidifier nearby (spoiler alert🚨- we just ordered some really cool ones that will be available soon!).

5. EXPECT SOME OLDER LEAVES TO DIE OFF🌿

It’s completely normal for plants to shed their oldest leaves during winter months to conserve energy - read that again!!! Don’t fret over a few dying leaves. Just know your plant will come back fuller and better than ever in the spring!
